Covid-19: UK’s New Travel Rules

The UK government had authorized travel in England from May 17 of 2021. Here are the updates on UK’s new travel rules for international travel. The conditions for travel, including testing and quarantine measures, will be determined by the color of the nation from which the UK traveler came under the UK’s traffic light system for travel. Countries are divided into three categories by the traffic light system: green, amber, and red. Each color represents the COVID-19 danger in different nations and dictates the testing and quarantine rules.

From Oct 4th, 2021 the rules for travel will be changed and made into a more ‘ simplified system for international travel’ as stated by Grant Shapps, UK’s transport secretary.

What are the new travel regulations?

The earlier rules had different travel requirements for Green, Amber, and Red list countries, but since Oct 4th UK government has decided to replace it with a two-tier travel system which means that Green and Amber list countries were merged with green and termed as low-risk nations. The travel restrictions for these nations will be eased. This also includes travelers who are fully vaccinated. Only England will be affected by the change, as Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will decide their own entry and leave procedures.

But if things go out of hand and cases begin to rise then it will lead the UK government to go back to the current testing requirements that include mandatory PCR testing.

Is PCR testing going to be required after Oct 4th, 2021?

Green list and Amber list countries (vaccinated travelers)- A lateral flow test is needed to be taken on or before Day 2 of their arrival.

Note: Only fully vaccinated travelers who have received vaccines from an approved list of countries are qualified to travel under these new guidelines.

Green list and Amber list countries ( non-vaccinated travelers)- A pre-departure or a Covid-19 on Days 2 and 8 will need to be taken and you will need to self isolate for 10 days
